What is a Transmission Service?

Transmission service consists of changing the transmission fluid filter before adding the transmission fluid. Here are some simple steps for a DIY automatic transmission fluid (ATF) change.

ATF

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is the fluid used in vehicles with ;self-shifting ;or automatic transmissions. It is typically colored red or green to distinguish it.

Protect Your Vehicle

Automatic transmission fluid is the ;life-blood ;of the transmission. The fluid produces hydraulic pressure needed to operate the transmission. It also cools and lubricates the transmission. When the fluid level is low, the pump may draw air into the system. Air in the hydraulic system interrupts the proper flow of automatic transmission fluid. Damage may occur very quickly when the transmission fluid ;is low.

Changing ATF

Step-by-step:

  • Drain the transmission fluid: First, disconnect a cooling line running from the transmission to the radiator. Connect a piece of rubber tubing to the pipe, and place the free end of the tube into an empty jug. Start the engine and let it idle. Transmission fluid should flow out of the cooling line and into the jug. As soon as the fluid stops to flow, turn off the engine. You can reconnect after the cooling line to the radiator.
  • Remove the bolts holding the drain pan to the bottom of the transmission.
  • Clean with transmission fluid the drain pan
  • Replace the filter
  • Replace the gasket
  • Install the pan: Once the filter and gasket are in place, put the pan back onto the transmission. Hand-thread the bolts for the first few turns so that you won't strip the threading. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the appropriate tightness. We advise you not to over tighten the bolts as it can damage the threads in the transmission and dent the pan.
  • Fill with automatic transmission fluid. Refer to your owner's manual to choose the appropriate automatic transmission fluid (check the quantity as well).
