Rider Safety

The ATV Safety Institute provides free rider training during ATV Safety Week in spring. The ATV RiderCourse is also free year round for anyone who has purchased a new, qualifying ATV from an ATV Safety Institute member company. The ASI offers a free E-Course, which is available online 24/7. This online course is available in three specific courses for adults, teens, and children. It's important to remember that ATV Safety is a year-round activity. We advice going through with the training and following their recommendations to a T if you want to have safe and joyful rides.

Know the Facts

92 percent of all ATV-related fatalities are the result of warned-against behaviors, such as youth riding on adult-sized ATVs. This just goes to show that those rules exist for a reason, and that you should comply with them to minimize the probability of having an accident while on your ATV. If you need a bit of guidance in this department, remember that during ATV Safety Week, riders can learn about the proper operation of their machine, find out about helmets and other protective gear, and learn ways to dramatically reduce risk.

The ATV Safety Institute’s Golden Rules

  • Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves.
  • Never ride on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted by law. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway.
  • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people.
  • Ride an ATV that’s right for your age.
  • Supervise riders younger than 16.
  • Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.
  • Take a hands-on ATV RiderCourse and the free online E-Course.
